Mitch McConnell is an American politician and a retired attorney serving as the Senior United States Senator from Kentucky since 1985. A member of the Republican Party, he has served as s Senate Minority Leader since 2021 and previously as majority leader from 2015 to 2021. He is the longest-serving Senate party leader of either party in the history of the United States Senate.
Early life and career
McConnell was born in Sheffield, Alabama, in 1942. His family moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1956, where he attended duPont Manual High School. He was the student council president at his high school during his junior year. He graduated from the University of Louisville where he was president of the Student Council of the College of Arts and Sciences and the University of Kentucky School of Law where he was president of the Student Bar Association.
In March 1967,McConnell enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army Reserve at Louisville, Kentucky. After working as a clerk for a federal judge and as an attorney in private practice, he entered politics in 1978 when he was elected judge/executive of Jefferson County, Kentucky. He was re-elected in 1981 He served in that position until 1984, when he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984.
Senate career
McConnell was elected to the Senate in 1984, defeating incumbent Democrat Walter Huddleston. He has been re-elected five times, most recently in 2020. During his time in the Senate, McConnell was chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee from 1997 to 2001. He became the longest-serving Senate Republican leader in the history of the United States in June 2018 and is the longest-serving U.S. senator from Kentucky in history. In the political circles he is considered as a very a skilled political strategist and tactician.
He has previously served in leadership as the Majority Whip in the 108th and 109th Congresses and as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee during the 1998 and 2000 election cycles.
McConnell has served on a number of committees, including the Appropriations Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Foreign Relations Committee. Under his leadership the Senate Republican majority passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act in 2018, the First Step Act, the Great American Outdoors Act ,his contribution to the American Politics is immense. He has been praised in numerous media outlets for his Senate leadership. He’s been often called “the most important Republican since Ronald Reagan”. McConnell is married to Secretary Elaine L. Chao, the 18th U.S. Secretary of Transportation .He is a proud father of three daughters.
