John Anthony Barrasso III is an American physician and politician serving as the senior United States senator from Wyoming since 2007. A member of the Republican Party, he has served as Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference since 2019, making him the third-ranking Republican in the Senate.

Early Life and Career

Born in Reading, Pennsylvania On July 21, 1952,He completed his schooling from  Berks Catholic High School He graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1975 where he received his B.S. in 1974 and M.D in 1978., and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Yale Medical School in New Haven, Connecticut. He practiced medicine in Casper, Wyoming, for 17 years, he was also active in various medical societies and associations before entering politics.

Political career

Barrasso was elected to the Wyoming State Senate in 2002 and served until 2007, He represented Wyoming’s 27th Senate District where he chaired the Transportation and Highways Committee.

.In 2006, Barrasso was elected to the U.S. Senate to succeed Craig Thomas, who retired. He has been re-elected twice,in 2012 and  most recently in 2018.He is the third-ranking member in the Senate Republican leadership as Chair of the Senate Republican Conference.

During his time in the Senate, Barrasso has served on a number of committees, including the Appropriations Committee, the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and the Foreign Relations Committee. Currently he serves on committees that directly impact the economy, energy interests, public lands, national parks and trade. In addition to other committee assignments, Barrasso is also a ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Issues and Positions

Barrasso is a conservative Republican who supports limited government, lower taxes, less spending, traditional family values, local control and a strong national defence. He is also pro-life and against gay marriage. As Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference he is the third-ranking member in the Senate Republican leadership.

  • Passed legislation to repeal the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act.
  • .Has opposed the Russian-backed Nord Stream 2
  • He has  voted against a bill that would have expanded background checks for all gun buyers.
  • Barrasso voted against final passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023.
  • He is the first physician to serve as Wyoming’s senior senator.
  • He is a member of the board of directors of Presidential Classroom and the  Casper Chamber of Commerce
  • Barrasso has also served as President of the Wyoming Medical Society And was named Wyoming Physician of the Year.

John Barrasso is a powerful figure in Wyoming politics and a respected member of the Senate Republican leadership. He is a strong advocate for conservative values and is popularly known as Wyoming’s Doctor.
